Please consider donating to Feed the Hungry's Emergency Response Program to feed families in San Miguel de Allende

We are fundraising to feed families affected by Covid-19

Dear Friends of Feed the Hungry,

During these unprecedented times, we have all had to make many adjustments to our lives. While it is very likely that we will get back to our normal, comfortable routines, this will not be the case for many of the more than 4,000 children we feed in our school kitchens—or for their families.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many families in San Miguel de Allende abruptly lost their sources of income, and in March, schools were closed. Children who had been served meals in our school kitchens could no longer receive this critically important nutrition.

Feed the Hungry quickly mobilized to retool operations in order to get food to those in need, while complying with emergency government regulations and also ensuring the safety of our staff and workers. In the first 15 weeks of our Feed the Families emergency operation, more than 26,000 – 12 kilo pantries of food were distributed, each containing enough healthy ingredients to feed a family of 5 for 2 weeks. To respond to urgent requests for help from other NGOs and grassroots groups, our outreach expanded beyond the school communities and charities that we typically serve.

What’s Next?

At this time of the year, we would typically fund-raise to welcome thousands of children back to school. We don’t know when we will be able to reopen our kitchens this year. Although the municipality is allowing limited commerce to resume operations, unemployment is still widespread and it is uncertain when our local economy will fully recover.

What we do know is that we cannot abandon these families. Therefore, we will continue our Feed the Families special emergency response program, which started in March. By the end of August, we will have provided food for nearly 5 million meals to needy families during this five-month period.

When school re-openings are announced by the Public Education System, we will gear up to resume the school meals program. Running these two programs simultaneously will pose many logistical problems and a heavy strain on our already tight budget. In our 35 years of operations, we have never been so tested - and never so motivated to rise to the challenge.

Sincerely,

Al Kocourek, President
