In Honor of Lois Weiss
We are sad to learn of the passing of Lois Weiss, a beloved volunteer English teacher who helped many children in the community of Los Ricos de Abajo further their education. Lois was also one of the instigators and sponsors of what were initially called the Parking Lot Scholarships that helped students with their secondary school expenses. As the program expanded, many students went on to finish high school and attend univiersities.
Lois enjoyed being with the children and making them laugh as she led them in singing “Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.”
Before the vado (a low-lying concrete bridge) was built, the Los Ricos community was difficult to reach after a hard rain. We remember the time that Lois hitched a ride on the front fender of a Mexican pickup to get across the wide Rio Laja. Her spirit and enthusiasm were boundless!
“I’ve been thinking about why I enjoyed Los Ricos. I’ve never been a teacher – I’m a lawyer - but I love little kids. I had few illusions about what I could offer them academically. I just loved being with them; seeing those children laugh; showing them that white-haired gringos could be fun; trusting that at least they would remember the parts of the body – in ENGLISH,” Lois Weiss
This campaign raises funds to provide the children with scholarships and encourage continued education, in Lois’s honor.
