Food for More than 12 Million Meals Distributed So Far

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools were closed in March 2020. Children who had been served meals in our school kitchens could no longer receive this critically important nutrition. We quickly mobilized to retool operations in order to provide food for entire families, while complying with emergency government regulations and also ensuring the safety of staff and volunteers.

In the first 12 months of their Feed the Families emergency operation, more than 97,000 food-bags were delivered, with each bag containing enough food to feed a family of 5 for 2 weeks. To respond to urgent requests from other NGOs and from concerned individuals trying to rescue their neighbors, outreach expanded beyond the communities where we typically operate. As of the end of July 2021, 127,965 food bags have been distributed to more than 3,000 families; the ingredients for 12.4 million meals.

What’s Next?

It is not known when children will be back in school, or how long until their parents will be back to work. Therefore, the Feed the Families operation will continue as long as the need exists and funds don’t run dry. At the same time, we plan to gear up to resume the school meals program in 2022.

Running these two programs simultaneously will be a logistical and financial challenge. “In our 35 years of operations, we have never been so tested - and never so motivated to rise to the occasion,” says Al Kocourek, President of Feed the Hungry.
